Art licensing is essentially the art of 'renting' — it means you can use one of my designs on a product you sell, without having to own the artwork outright. Say you're creating homewares, stationery, or apparel — you'd license a design from me to bring it to life on your product.
Licensing can be exclusive or non-exclusive, and is always granted for a set period of time, so there's a clear beginning and end to how the design is used.
For an exclusive license, we'll work together to negotiate and agree on terms for how the design is used.
Exclusivity is always specific to your industry and territory — so if your license covers childrenswear in the USA, I'm still free to license that same design for childrenswear in Australia (a different territory), or for a different category like wallpaper or stationery within the USA.
I retain copyright and ownership of the design throughout.
At the end of our agreed time period, you'll have first right to renew the license. If you choose not to renew, the rights simply return to me, the artist.
Non-exclusive licensing means you can license a design from me to be printed onto your products. The same design may also be used by other companies, and may also be available through my own shop on Spoonflower.
I retain copyright of the design throughout.
No license is required to sell goods made using fabric featuring my designs when purchased from Spoonflower.
